Position Summary

Responsible for assisting in construction surveys for City projects and collecting survey data used for designing City projects. Also, responsible for assisting in land surveys of City property and flood plain issues.


Essential Job Functions

  1. Set up new monuments and control points at the direction of the Engineering Survey Party Chief.
  2. Aid in collecting data on existing monuments, control points, terrain features and existing infrastructure or property improvements.
  3. Place construction stakes for various departments while properly using tools and equipment.
  4. Aid in quantity measurements and calculations for construction projects.
  5. Research and retrieve record documents from City archive files.
  6. Reduce field notes mathematically both electronically and manually.
  7. Maintain all survey equipment as needed.





Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

Education/ Experience:     

  • 2-5 years land surveying, including boundary and construction


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:           

  • Knowledge using surveyor’s chain/tape, plumb bob while employing proper techniques for measuring
  • Knowledge of boundary surveying practices and techniques
  • Knowledge of topographic surveying practices and techniques
  • Knowledge of construction staking practices and techniques
  • Knowledge of basic algebra and geometry
  • Skill operating a computer commensurate with required survey activities
  • Skill using tools required for surveying
  • Ability to reduce and interpret field data under the direction of a supervisor
  • Ability to maintain an organized work environment
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technology


Licenses & Certifications

 Valid Class C Texas driver's license

Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

The incumbent works outdoors in high traffic areas with frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Work sites can also include undeveloped areas including fields, brush and wooded areas, creek bottoms, and drainage channels. Work is often required on construction sites with exposure to heavy equipment, excavations, fumes, dust, and high noise levels.

Minimum Education & Work Experience

 High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)
 Up to 5 years land surveying experience, including boundary and construction
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
