Position Summary

Responsible for overseeing a team of operators to ensure complete route coverage, prompt and courteous customer service to Garland’s business community. Also, responsible for asset inventory, as well as the delivery, removal, and repair of EWS containers.

 

Essential Job Functions

  1. Oversee team of operators to ensure routes are serviced in a timely manner. Complete required route/productivity sheets.
  2. Assign personnel and equipment in a manner that ensures balanced crews and complete coverage of collection areas. Assist in planning and execution of re-routes to maximize efficiency.
  3. May ensure delivery of quality collection service by driving routes to observe collections, coach to improve job performance, correct unsafe work practices, and resolve conflict and/or collection problems.
  4. Meet on site or via telephone with customers to provide information, repair property damage, give claim cards, discuss and resolve complaints.
  5. Operate various pieces of equipment as required.
  6. Identify unsatisfactory containers and tag containers in accordance with applicable departmental procedures.
  7. Ensure the completion of pre- and post-operation inspection of commercial vehicles in accordance department policies.
  8. Monitor and audit waste for evidence of unacceptable waste, avoiding the improper disposal of material at the Transfer Station and Landfill.
  9. Clean area around an accidental waste spill, ensuring adherence to all applicable safety standards and policies.

Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

Education/ Experience: 

  • 5-7 years in refuse collection
  • 2-3 years experience in leadership role
  • 2-3 years experience operating heavy equipment

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of supervisory principles and practices
  • Basic knowledge of safety hazards and practices relating to solid waste collection operations
  • Ability to lead employees in the completion of work assignments
  • Ability to understand and implement verbal and written instructions
  • Skill in maintaining accurate records
  • Demonstrated skill to perform minor repairs to containers

Licenses & Certifications

Valid Class B Texas commercial driver's license required
Valid Class A Texas commercial driver's license or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire

Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

The incumbent works in an outdoor environment; frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.

Minimum Education & Work Experience

• High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
• 5 years related experience
• 2 years experience in leadership role
