Responsible for the efficient operation of the Regional Branch Library to meet the recreational and informational needs of the City.
Essential Job Functions
Use up-to-date knowledge of managerial policies, practices and controls, including federal, state, and city laws, rules, and regulations to manage a Branch Library.
Analyze service delivery and recommend needed revisions to policy and procedure to improve service.
Develop and implement programming ideas that support the library mission and goals. Evaluate the effectiveness and quality of existing programs to ensure they address customer needs and interest.
Provide staff training, monitor their work, complete performance reviews and goal setting, and counsel/coach staff as needed.
Perform administrative record keeping and reporting including activity reports, timesheets, surveys, analyses, etc. Analyze branch budget needs and submit annual branch funding requests.
Make recommendations for purchase of library materials based on knowledge of community interests.
Develop cooperative and congenial relationships with service area organizations and community leaders.
Monitor building and grounds maintenance needs and custodial needs of library facility, including furnishings, equipment and grounds to ensure proper working conditions.
Assist and train patrons in the use of Internet, applications (productivity software), and reference databases to meet their informational needs.
Provide professional reference and reader’s advisory services to library users.
Monitor current events, trends and popular culture to forecast customer demands.
Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills
4-6 years experience in public services at a medium-sized, multi-branch public library
2-3 years experience in a public library
2-3 years supervisory level responsibility
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Extensive knowledge of public relations methods practices and procedures
Extensive knowledge of computer hardware, software and peripherals utilized in automated library systems
Excellent written and oral communications skills, including public speaking and presentations
Intermediate skill with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, Access)
Skill in utilizing current technology and social media
Ability to work cooperatively and congenially with others, individually and in a team
Ability to speak and read Spanish or Vietnamese
Licenses & Certifications
Valid Class C Texas driver's license
Physical Tasks & Working Conditions
The incumbent works in a typical office environment. Must be able to reach materials at 90” height shelving or shelving at floor level, push/pull 200 lb. loaded book cart, lift up to 50 pound bins, utilize keyboard and peripherals, and operate a telephone. Primary environment will be in a climate controlled, indoor atmosphere with some exposure to dust. Travel between library facilities, as required.
Master's Degree in library and information science (MLS, MLIS) from an American Library Association accredited college or university 4 years professional library experience 2 years experience in a public library 2 years supervisory level responsibility
