  • Position Summary

    Responsible for sorting and shelving library books and materials.  Also, responsible for assisting the library staff in performing related customer service and clerical work.


    Essential Job Functions

    1. Retrieve items and return materials to their appropriate place on the shelves, according to alphabetical or numeric filing.
    2. Straighten shelves and check for proper order. Locate missing items.
    3. Sort materials and lift book bins.
    4. Transfer library materials from book carts to appropriate locations.
    5. Assist in unloading books from van.
    6. Assist in lifting, moving, and setting up heavy items such as computer equipment or furniture.
    7. Distribute periodicals, newspapers and mail to appropriate locations. Pull old periodicals for discarding, recycling and/or resale.
    8. Check-in and trace materials using a computerized system.
    9. Provide basic level assistance for library users and refer users to appropriate library staff.

    Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

    Education/ Experience:     

    • Some experience in a library environment


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • General knowledge of standard library filing systems
    • Skill to operate a computer keyboard to enter and retrieve information regarding books and materials
    • Ability to understand and implement oral and written directions 
    • Ability to drive a vehicle

    Licenses & Certifications

     Valid Class C Texas driver's license

    Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

    The incumbent works in a typical library environment, but physical labor is required. Occasional outdoor work, and travel between city and library facilities may occur. Primary environment will be in a climate controlled, indoor atmosphere with some exposure to dust and occasional unpleasant conditions. Physical tasks will include lifting, squatting, bending, stooping, reaching overhead and carrying supplies, as needed to accomplish the tasks of the activity on a daily basis. Must be able to reach materials at 90” height shelving or shelving at floor level, lift/carry up to 50 pounds regularly, and push/pull 200 pound wheeled book cart. Must also be able to utilize keyboard and peripherals, handheld mobile devices, and multi-function office phones.

    REQUIRED WORK HOURS: The incumbent is required to work 19 hours per week, with varying hours, as needed to support operations. Hours include 9:00 a.m. through 9:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 9:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

    REQUIRED WORK LOCATIONS: The incumbent must be available to work at any of the four (4) Garland Library locations.

    Minimum Education & Work Experience

    Completion of the tenth grade
    At least 16 years of age
