  • Position Summary

    Responsible for managing maintenance and upgrades to SCADA and the Energy Management System (EMS) used for monitoring and controlling the GP&L Generation, Transmission and Distribution Electric Systems.

    Essential Job Functions

      1. Work with Systems Operations and QSE by attending meetings; by phone or by emails, and by reviewing Work Order tickets to document required EMS changes and report project progress.
      2. Develop and oversee team project plans; assign tasks; assist staff in developing a systematic approach for design, implementation and completion of projects.
      3. Develop job training plans to overcome deficiencies in knowledge and skills.
      4. Update and implement strategic plan for EMS Engineering.
      5. Analyze and troubleshoot EMS issues and suggest solutions to management; perform quality assurance checks and engineering analysis as needed.
      6. Develop and manage cross-discipline technical teams to ensure effective performance in meeting project goals and objectives; assign tasks and provide performance feedback as needed to project team members and management.
      7. Serve as a liaison with other utilities, ERCOT subcommittees and working groups.
      8. Good understanding of the organized electric market.
      9. Assist with coordination and/or participate in upgrades and troubleshooting of the Energy Management and Market Systems
      10. Mentor team members.


    Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

    Education/ Experience:     

    • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering/Power Systems
    • 10 years of experience in Management of all aspects of electric system engineering including study, operations and settlement computer system requirements, implementation and support

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • Knowledge of power systems engineering
    • Knowledge of WAN, LAN and RTU communications
    • Knowledge of RDBMS architectures
    • Knowledge of NERC CIP requirements
    • Strong understanding of Transmission and Substations
    • Strong understanding of ERCOT Power Market
    • Skill in presenting training sessions
    • Skill designing and coding user interfaces for system operators and settlement analysts
    • Skill using Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
    • Project management skills
    • Ability to operate and maintain computer systems
    • Ability to effectively manage a technical team of people from various disciplines
    • Ability to define the requirements for software application programs

    Licenses & Certifications

     Valid Class C Texas driver's license

    The incumbent works in a typical office environment; relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards.

    Minimum Education & Work Experience

     Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
     8 years related experience in power systems operation, control systems, and analytical applications; substation and plant control systems, of which five (5) years must be in supporting SCADA/EMS/GMS.
     At least two (2) years supervisory or management experience
    Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
