  • Position Summary

    Responsible for performing routine animal care and related duties at the Garland Animal Services’ Adoption Center and animal shelter including: cleaning and maintaining kennel areas, socializing with adoptable animals and assisting citizens interested in adoption. Also responsible for leading volunteers with duties and responsibilities.

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Perform adoption center and animal shelter duties including but not limited to handling animals, leading and instructing volunteers with duties, receiving animals brought to the adoption center and animal shelter by shelter staff, preparing adoption paperwork.
    2. Maintain proper inventory level of food, cleaning and other supplies.
    3. Notify Supervisor when restocking items from shelter is needed.
    4. Perform kennel cleaning and other related housekeeping duties.
    5. Assist Adoption Center and animal shelter guests with adoption process.
    6. Assist with other shelter duties as needed.


    Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

    Education/ Experience:     

    • Experience with animals
    • Experience with customer service
    • Experience handling cash


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • Basic skill operating a computer and office equipment
    • Ability to handle animals over 25 pounds
    • Ability to assist guest with adoption process
    • Ability to thoroughly clean

    Licenses & Certifications

    Valid State of Texas Class C driver's license
    Must obtain Euthanasia Technician Certification within 6 months of employment

    Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

    The work is performed in an animal shelter surrounding. Position requires workers to walk or stand for periods oat a time; lift and carry over 25 pounds; bend, reach, hold, grasp and turn objects; and use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak clearly and to use normal or aided vision and hearing. Work is subject to working on weekends and holidays. Employee may have to work outside in a variety of weather conditions.
    **This is a Temporary Part-Time position limited to working 1000 hours in a 12 month period.

    Minimum Education & Work Experience

     High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) equivalent
     Customer service experience
    Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
