  • Position Summary

    Responsible for promoting a safe work environment by analyzing accident trends, developing policies and training to reduce accidents and injuries. Also, responsible for investigating accidents and customer complaints regarding property damage. 

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Observe employees on the job for safe/unsafe activities and recommend discipline for continual unsafe behavior.
    2. Compliment safe behaviors. Provide suggestions on improving unsafe behaviors and council employees as needed.
    3. Review, write and develop training and tailgate meetings material; conduct training as necessary.
    4. Continuously evaluate department safety status and write needed safety policies and procedures.
    5. Determine probable causes by reviewing and recording accident scenes, interviewing witnesses and compiling reports.
    6. Communicate with citizens to resolve problems and/or discuss property damage.
    7. Run queries on accident database to identify trends and propose remedial actions to address or reduce trends.
    8. Plan, coordinate and chair weekly Safety Review Committee meeting to review accidents and injuries.

    Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

    Education/ Experience:     

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Safety Administration, Industrial Hygiene or related area of study
    • 3-5 years experience in safety administration or similar field

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:           

    • Extensive knowledge of current safety practices
    • Comprehensive knowledge on properly investigating accidents
    • Skill in Microsoft Office including Excel, Access, Outlook and Word
    • Skill writing procedures, policies and memos
    • Skill developing constructive training programs
    • Strong prioritization and presentation skills
    • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with managers, co-workers and citizens
    • Ability to make ad hoc decisions

    Licenses & Certifications

     Certified Safety Professional preferred
     OSHA General Industry and Construction Certification preferred
     American Red Cross or other CPR Instructor Certification preferred
     DOT Workzone Instructor Certification preferred
     Defensive Driving or other driver safety instructor certification preferred
     Valid Class C Texas driver's license

    Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

    The incumbent works in a typical office environment; occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Frequent site visits and outside work required.

    Minimum Education & Work Experience

     Four-year college degree
     3 years related experience
