  • Position Summary

    Chemist

     

    Responsible for analysis of water and wastewater samples for microbial, inorganic, and organic contaminants and for determining process efficiency and protocol compliance of water and wastewater treatment plants. Also, responsible for monitoring effluent discharges of industrial companies.

     

    Sr. Chemist

     

    Responsible for analysis of water and wastewater samples for microbial, inorganic, and organic contaminants and for determining process efficiency and protocol compliance of water and wastewater treatment plants. Act as a Technical Director for Chemical and Microbiological Analysis for State Lab Accreditation. Also responsible for QA/QC review and training other staff members.

     

    Target Hiring Range: $45,219 - $65,666/yr.

    Essential Job Functions

    Chemist
    1. Analyze water and wastewater samples from industrial users and treatment plants for inorganic, organic and microbiological contaminants.
    2. Determine if EPA/TCEQ/NELAP quality control/assurance standards were followed per method acceptance criteria and make qualified judgments regarding data analysis parameters.
    3. Generate process and compliance data reports for all customers and regulatory agencies.
    4. Maintain instrument reliability by performing routine preventive maintenance.
    5. Maintain and update application database for testing results and compliance reports.
    6. Write and prepare standard operating procedures for the laboratory.

    Sr. Chemist

    1. Analyze water and wastewater samples from industrial users and treatment plants for microbiological, organic and inorganic contaminants.
    2. Provide daily quality assurance review of microbiological, organic and inorganic testing results for adherence to National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP).
    3. Take on the role of NELAP Technical Director of Chemical and/or Microbiological Analysis.
    4. Train other staff members on the procedures of the lab and develop training procedures
    5. Research and recommend changes to lab testing policies and procedures including new technology and regulatory requirements
    6. Identify and recommend long-term budget needs. Maintain inventory of chemicals and supplies.
    7. Maintain and update application database for testing results and compliance reports.
    8. Maintain instrument reliability by performing routine preventive maintenance.
    9. Write and prepare standard operating procedures for the laboratory.
    10. Assist in the maintenance of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and in generating Ad-hoc reports from LIMS
    11. Prepare monthly reports for City leadership, EPA and TCEQ.

     

     

    Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

    Chemist

     

    Education/ Experience:     

    • 2-4 years experience in inorganic sample testing

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:          

    • Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory instrumentation  theory
    • Comprehensive knowledge of TCEQ and NELAP drinking water standards
    • Comprehensive knowledge of TCEQ, NELAP and EPA quality assurance standards
    • Skill in operating appropriate application database
    • Skill in utilizing various laboratory equipment and testing software
    • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision
    • Skill in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word)

    Sr. Chemist

     

    Education/ Experience: 

    • 5-7 years’ experience utilizing with microbiological, organic, and inorganic sample testing
    • Qualifications to be a NELAP Technical Director in both Chemical and Microbiological Analysis

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:   

    • Extensive knowledge of laboratory instrumentation theory
    • Extensive knowledge of TCEQ and NELAP drinking water standards
    • Extensive knowledge of TCEQ, NELAP and EPA quality assurance standards
    • Comprehensive knowledge of testing procedures for microbiological, organic and inorganic contaminants
    • Skill in operating appropriate application database
    • Skill in utilizing various laboratory equipment and testing software

    Minimum Education & Work Experience

     Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related area
     2 years related experience
     Up to1 year experience with National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP)
    Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

    Sr. Chemist
     Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related area
     5 years related experience
     Qualifications to be a NELAP Technical Director in either Chemicals or Microbiological Analysis
     3 years’ experience with National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP)
    Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
