  • Position Summary

    Responsible for the daily deposits, tax reports and supervision of departmental tax representatives.  Also, responsible for meeting and answering questions from internal and external tax customers and assist with processing and collecting monies owed to the City of Garland.


    Target Hiring Range: $17.51/hr - $21.80/hr

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Oversee Revenue Representatives in the collection of taxes.
    2. Review and process information received from the Dallas Central Appraisal District. Verify its accuracy.
    3. Provide customer service by responding to problems and/or inquiries relating to tax bills, payments, refunds and exemptions.  
    4. Handle escalated tax issues particularly those which may contain some degree of complexity.
    5. Introduce innovative process improvements which will enhance the collection process and/or customer experience.
    6. Process, file and maintain important and confidential property tax documentation, invoices and payments received from customers.
    7. Accept and process property tax payments from customers. Organize and balance daily deposits for finance department.
    8. Post payments in official tax control ledger.
    9. Research and correct returned statements on individual accounts to ensure billing accuracy.   
    10. Correspond with and provide the Tax Attorney information regarding delinquent accounts.
    11. Compile, balance and process monthly, quarterly and yearly reports for Management, Finance and Budget Departments, State and US Department of Commerce in regards to monies collected, Tax Roll Adjustments and etc.
    12. Assume temporary responsibility of the tax office operations during the absence of the Tax Assessor Collector.


    Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

    Education/ Experience:     

    • 4-6 years experience in tax collections

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:           

    • Comprehensive knowledge of laws, ordinances, City codes, directives and policies regarding property tax
    • Comprehensive knowledge of filing methods and records management techniques
    • Skill in decision making and use of analytical judgment appropriate to the work environment
    • Skill to operate basic office equipment
    • Skill in de-escalating stressful situations involving irate customers
    • Skill utilizing tax programs and computer software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
    • Skill in providing excellent customer service
    • Ability to multi task in a fast pace environment
    • Ability to be attentive to detail and accuracy


    Licenses & Certifications

    Registered Texas Collector certification or the ability to obtain within 24 months of hire
    Valid Class C Texas driver's license

    Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

    The incumbent works in a typical office environment; relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards.

    Minimum Education & Work Experience

    High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
    4 years related experience
    Registered Texas Collector certification or the ability to obtain within 24 months of hire
    Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
