Position Summary

Responsible for circulating library materials by maintaining a patron and library material database, handling circulation-related problems in absence of supervisor, and assisting the circulation staff in performing related clerical work and light manual tasks.

 

Target Hring Range: $15.91/hr - $19.25/hr

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provide information and customer service in person and over the telephone.
  2. Issue library patron cards.
  3. Enter patrons into a database that allows citizens to borrow materials from the library.
  4. Ensure the continuous operation of the library circulation function by operating personals computers, assessing and collecting fines for overdue materials and sending overdue notices.

Minimum Education & Work Experience

 Two year Associate degree
 2-3 years work experience in a retail or service environment using computer technologies
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

Education/ Experience:     

  • Two year Associate degree in library technology with coursework in circulation services
  • 2-3 years experience in a public library setting
  • Ability to speak and read Spanish at the intermediate level

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of library organization and cataloguing systems
  • Knowledge of alpha and numerical filing systems
  • Skill operating a computer keyboard
  • Skill in cash handling
  • Skill multitasking
  • Ability to type 40 words per minute
  • Ability to organize materials according to alpha and numeric system
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift objects
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with the public
  • Ability to handle citizen concerns and other public/personal situations

Licenses & Certifications

 Valid Class C Texas driver's license

Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

The incumbent works in a typical library environment but some physical labor is required. Occasional outdoor work, and travel between city and library facilities may occur. Primary environment will be in a climate controlled, indoor atmosphere with some exposure to dust and occasional unpleasant conditions. Physical tasks include lifting, squatting, bending, stooping, walking, and carrying supplies, as needed, to accomplish the tasks of the activity on a daily basis. Must be able to reach materials at 90” height shelving or shelving at floor level, lift/ carry up to 50 pounds infrequently, and push/pull 200 pound wheeled book cart.
Must also be able to utilize keyboard and peripherals, handheld mobile devices, and multi-function office phones.
