Position Summary

Responsible for providing comprehensive nursing services directly to clients in a public health program.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Investigate communicable disease and provide prophylaxis.
  2. Performs well baby/child exams following the Texas Health Steps guidelines. Make referrals needed and charts for the well baby/child exams.
  3. Performs laboratory screening (newborn screening, lead, TB and hemoglobin).
  4. Provide nutritional and developmental information to parent/guardian.
  5. Respond to phone calls from the public inquiring about immunizations, communicable diseases or the well child clinic.
  6. Administer immunizations to clients from infancy to senior adults. Administers TB (tuberculosis) screening and referrals with follow up as needed.
  7. Provides information to parents/guardians or to the public at large regarding vaccine preventable diseases.
  8. Research and administer international travel vaccines.

Minimum Education & Work Experience

 Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
 2 years experience
 Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Texas
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

Education/ Experience:     

v      Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

v      2-4 years nursing experience


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:           

v      Knowledge of all immunization requirements in the State of Texas

v      Knowledge of epidemiology and ability to do communicable disease investigations and administer prophylactic treatment as needed in a timely manner

v      Knowledge of universal precautions and blood borne pathogens

v      Knowledge of emergency procedures and protocol

v      Ability to learn immunization schedules and read histories

v      Ability to understand the storage and handling of all vaccines used within the health department

Licenses & Certifications

 Licensed Registered Nurse in State of Texas
 Valid Class C Texas driver's license

Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

The incumbent works typically in an office/clinic environment with exposure to patient illness and may be subjected to occasional travel to various job sites and health care facilities. Office/Clinic environment frequently requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and kneeling during examination of patients and operation of a motor vehicle. Routinely works with medical sharps requiring universal precautions to avoid contact with pathogens. May be exposed to biohazards and infections carried by humans and bodily fluids.
