Position Summary

Responsible for the efficient operation of the neighborhood branch library to meet the recreational and informational needs of the City under the direction of library system administration.

 

Essential Job Functions

  1. Use up-to-date knowledge of managerial policies, practices and controls, including federal, state, and city laws, rules and regulations to manage a branch library.
  2. Oversee and administer all cash receipts, including the training and oversight of staff collecting funds, as well as for providing accurate records of receipt and preparing funds for deposit.
  3. Analyze service delivery and recommend revisions to policy and procedure to improve service.
  4. Develop and implement programming ideas that support the library mission and goals. Evaluate the effectiveness and quality of existing programs ensuring the addressing of customer needs and interest.
  5. Provide employee training, coaching and counseling. Monitor performance. Complete evaluations and goal setting.
  6. Perform administrative record keeping and reporting including activity reports, timesheets, surveys, analyses, etc. Analyze branch budget needs and submit annual branch funding requests.
  7. Make recommendations for purchase of library materials based on knowledge of community interests.
  8. Develop cooperative and congenial relationships with service area organizations and community leaders.
  9. Monitor building and grounds maintenance needs and custodial needs of library facility, including furnishings, equipment and grounds to ensure proper working conditions.
  10. Assist and train patrons in the use of Internet, applications (productivity software), and reference databases to meet their informational needs.
  11. Provide professional reference and reader’s advisory services to library users.
  12. Monitor current events, trends and popular culture to forecast customer demands.

Minimum Education & Work Experience

Master's Degree in library and information science (MLS, MLIS) from an American Library Association accredited college or university
4 years professional library experience
2 years experience in a public library
2 years supervisory level responsibility
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of public relations methods, practices, and procedures
  • Considerable knowledge of computer hardware, software and peripherals utilized in automated library systems
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including public speaking and presentations
  • Intermediate skill with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, Access)
  • Skill in utilizing current technology and social media
  • Ability to work cooperatively and congenially with others, individually and in a team
  • Ability to speak and read Spanish or Vietnamese

Licenses & Certifications

 Valid Class C Texas driver's license or the ability to obtain one

Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

The incumbent works in a typical office environment. Must be able to reach materials at 90” height shelving or shelving at floor level, push/pull 200 lb. loaded book cart, lift up to 50 pound bins, utilize keyboard and peripherals, and operate a telephone. Primary environment will be in a climate controlled, indoor atmosphere with some exposure to dust. Travel between library facilities, as required.
