Responsible for providing assistance to the Physician and other medical staff providing medical services to employees and other eligible patients.
Essential Job Functions
Obtain and document patient vital signs, medical history, current medications, and chief complaints.
Assist in examinations, assessments and treatment of patient acute and/or chronic health problems.
Administer oral and injectable drugs.
Assist in emergency medical situations and calculate dosages of medications.
Perform phlebotomy and conduct routine lab procedures.
Enter, maintain, and retrieve data from various paper and electronic sources.
Maintain supply inventories, order and stock supplies, maintain exam room supplies.
Assist with insurance pre-approvals, triage over the phone, education and administers shots.
Document and maintain patient records.
Minimum Education & Work Experience
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) 2 years experience in a medical office Medical Assistant Certification Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills
Six months to 1 year medical, specialized vocational, administrative, or technical study beyond High School
1 - 2 years experience performing medical assistant work in a family practice
Experience working in an electronic medical records system
Medical Assistant Certification
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
General knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and application to acute and some chronic general medical conditions
General knowledge of pediatrics, geriatrics, and family practice
Skill in phlebotomy, administering injections IM, SQ and ID
Ability to obtain vital signs, perform routine lab procedures and perform first aid, CPR
Ability to calculate dosage of medications and operate lab and medical testing equipment
Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, department managers, and health service contractors
Ability to understand and implement verbal and written instructions
Ability to operate a personal computer
Bilingual in Spanish and English
Licenses & Certifications
Medical Assistant Certification Valid Class C Texas driver's license CPR certification preferred
Physical Tasks & Working Conditions
The incumbent works in a typical office/clinic environment with exposure to patient illness and may be subjected to occasional travel to various job sites and health care facilities. May require sitting, standing, lifting, walking, bending, stooping, and kneeling during examination of patients. Routinely works with medical sharps requiring universal precautions to avoid contact with pathogens. May be exposed to biohazards and infections carried by humans and bodily fluids.
