Position Summary

An individual will be hired EITHER as a Medical Services Coordinator or a Public Health Nurse who is most closely aligned to the following criteria and is able to recognize how strategies, decisions, and business situations impact outcomes to maximize value added to the organization. 

 

Medical Services Coordinator

Responsible for the training and oversight of the Public Health Nurses which provide comprehensive nursing services directly to clients in a public health program.

Responsible for providing comprehensive nursing services directly to clients in a public health program.

 

 

Essential Job Functions

Medical Services Coordinator

  1. Oversee all nursing services provided at the Public Health Clinic. Delegate care and responsibilities to other nurses and supervise appropriately.
  2. Provide nutritional and developmental information to parent/guardian.
  3. Respond to phone calls from the public inquiring about immunizations, communicable diseases.
  4. Administer immunizations to clients from infancy to senior adults. Administers TB (tuberculosis) screening and referrals with follow up as needed.
  5. Provides information to parents/guardians or to the public at large regarding vaccine preventable diseases.
  6. Research and administer international travel vaccines.
  7. Train, communicate and monitor any new processes to the department and staff.
  8. Conduct annual population based assessments, child care and school audits, school immunization validation surveys and submit data to appropriate state agencies.
  9. Responsible for Texas Department of State Health Services Quarterly report.
  10. Coordinate off-site clinics

 

Public Health Nurse

  1. Provide health related information to patients and administer immunizations to clients from infancy to senior adults. Administer TB (tuberculosis) screening and referrals with follow up as needed.
  2. Respond to inquiries from the public about immunizations and communicable diseases.
  3. Research and administer international travel vaccines.
  4. Educate patients, healthcare providers and community organizations about communicable diseases, immunizations and general health.
  5. Provide oversight and assistance with program compliance to local providers in the Texas Vaccines for Children program. Conduct a yearly TVFC presentation and train new providers as needed.
  6. Conduct annual population based assessments, child care and school audits, school immunization validation surveys and submit data to appropriate state agencies.
  7. Provide education and clinical opportunities for nursing school students.
  8. Maintain inventory of vaccines.

 

Minimum Education & Work Experience

Medical Services Coordinator
 Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Texas
 2 – 4 years’ experience
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Public Health Nurse
 Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Texas
 2 years’ experience
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

Medical Services Coordinator

Education/ Experience:     

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • 4-6 years nursing experience
  • 1-2 years as a Lead or Supervisor

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:           

  • Extensive knowledge of all immunization requirements in the State of Texas
  • Extensive knowledge of universal precautions and blood borne pathogens
  • Extensive knowledge of emergency procedures and protocol
  • Ability to learn immunization schedules and read histories
  • Ability to understand the storage and handling of all vaccines used within the health department

 

Public Health Nurse

Education/ Experience:     

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • 2-4 years nursing experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:            

  • Knowledge of all immunization requirements in the State of Texas
  • Knowledge of communicable diseases.
  • Knowledge of universal precautions and blood borne pathogens
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and protocols
  • Ability to learn immunization schedules
  • Ability to understand the storage and handling of all vaccines used within the health department
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally orally and in writing
  • Ability to understand and explain lab testing results

Licenses & Certifications

 Licensed Registered Nurse in State of Texas
 Valid Class C Texas driver's license

Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

The incumbent works typically in an office/clinic environment with exposure to patient illness and may be subjected to occasional travel to various job sites and health care facilities. Office/Clinic environment frequently requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and kneeling during examination of patients and operation of a motor vehicle. Routinely works with medical sharps requiring universal precautions to avoid contact with pathogens. May be exposed to biohazards and infections carried by humans and bodily fluids.
