Position Summary

Responsible for performing accounting duties for Garland Power & Light within Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements. Duties include but are not limited to fixed asset accounting, journal entry preparation, account reconciliation, & special projects as assigned.

 

After an initial training period, this position will offer a hybrid work schedule.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Monitor timely & accurate reporting of all CWIP & Fixed Asset activity ensuring the proper accounting treatment.
  2. Close CWIP as projects are placed in service. Coordinate the closure of CIP with budget.
  3. Record assets acquisitions and retirements. Update fixed asset register.
  4. Reconcile general ledger accounts including CWIP, Inventory, and Property, Plant and Equipment. Participate in annual asset roll forward process.
  5. Prepare monthly journal entries & supporting schedules.
  6. Coordinate with various departments to gather data and support their information needs.
  7. Participate in system implementation and upgrade projects such as general ledger and work order & asset management system.
  8. Develop & analyze management reports.
  9. Create ad hoc reports for GP&L departments as required.

Minimum Education & Work Experience

- Four-year college degree in Accounting
- 5 years of progressive Accounting experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

Education/ Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree Accounting
  • CPA or CPA candidate
  • Electric Utility accounting experience preferred
  • Strong background and expertise in fixed asset accounting and/ or cost accounting preferred

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB)
  • Ability to analyze, research, & prepare financial reports
  • Ability to apply applicable laws, codes, and regulations
  • Ability to work independently
  • Establish & maintain effective working relationships and maintain customer focus
  • Proficient skills in Accounting & ERP systems
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint)
  • Proficient in preparing and analyzing financial reports
  • Strong attention to detail skills

Licenses & Certifications

Valid Class C Texas driver's license

The incumbent works in a typical office environment; relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards.
