Position Summary

Works under the supervision of the Parks Director, in coordination with the Asset Coordinator to collect GPS data and condition rating of public trees in Garlands’ Parks, Medians, and other City property for the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department.  This data will be used to determine management of Garland’s Urban Forest and to quantify the eco-system service benefits. 

 

Schedule: 40 hours/week Monday-Friday, Internship is expected to last 3-6 months 

Essential Job Functions

  1. Assist Asset Coordinator in the collection of data points in the field; specifically trees in Park and Medians.
  2. Collect field data on tree attributes such as; species, DBH, condition, maintenance requirements, etc.
  3. Utilizes ESRI programs such as Collector, QuickCapture, and ArcMap.
  4. Uses electronic devices such as iPad, R2 Trimble unit, and computers.
  5. Assist with general landscape and horticulture related activities.
  6. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Education & Work Experience

Pursuing a degree plan in Urban Forestry, Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Geographic Information Systems or related field.
Ability to identify trees common to North Central Texas, perform basic tree health assessments, and capture accurate and consistent measurement on trees attributes.
Working knowledge of computers and GIS systems
Ability to work independently
Current valid Texas Class C driver license.
Or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

Education/ Experience:

  • Knowledge and use of GPS collection applications such as Collector and ArcGIS 10.5.
  • Second semester course work

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work alone in an outdoor setting after minimal training.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions to complete objectives.
  • Ability to set up and operate GPS communication devices and problem solve.
  • Applications with education/experience specifically related to urban forestry and experience collecting data related to municipal tree inventories preferred.

Licenses & Certifications

Texas Class C Driver License

Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

The incumbent will typically work alone in an outdoor setting. Requires hearing and speaking to effectively communicate by telephone and in person and visual acuity to read documents and for use of personal computer; on occasion may be requested to lift up to 25 pounds.
