Position Summary

As a School Crossing Guard, you will escort children to and from school safely across various streets and intersections. The City of Garland offers on-the-job training, and you will have weekends, holidays, and summers off. 

 

*Schedule*

School Crossing Guards work two hours per day, Monday-Friday.

One hour in the morning from 7:15 am – 8:15 am and one hour in the afternoon from 3:15 pm – 4:15 pm. (10-15 hours per week)

 

Starting salary: $14.00

Essential Job Functions

  1. Display symbols, signs or hand/arm signals indicating that vehicles are to stop for children crossing the streets/intersections.
  2. Signal children to wait behind the curb until they are able to cross.
  3. Signal children to cross streets/intersections.
  4. Monitor safety and well-being of children en route to and from school.


 

Minimum Education & Work Experience

* Completion of 8th Grade
* No experience required
* Minimum corrected vision of 20/40 in each eye and corrected hearing of 30 decibels at 1000-3000 hertz
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

Education/ Experience:     

  • 1-2 years experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

 

  • Basic knowledge of basic traffic laws, ordinances and regulations and safety procedures
  • Skill to blow whistle, hold signs flags, etc. as required
  • Ability to make sound decisions concerning the safety and well-being of children
  • Ability to communicate simple verbal or written instructions
  • Ability to perform physical work required

Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

The incumbent's typical work environment is primarily outside and may be subjected to extremes of heat and cold, rain, humidity, wetness and traffic hazards. Must be able to walk at a rate of 4 feet per second for a distance of 160 feet.

Shift is a one hour morning shift from 7am-8am and a one hour afternoon shift from 3pm-4pm for a total of two hours per day.
